Its beaches with white and fine sand and warm waters of transparent blue have contributed to make it the second most important tourist destination in Cuba. There is no doubt that Varadero beach is “the most beautiful beach in the entire Cuban archipelago”.
But Varadero is not just beaches. Among its natural attractions are its caves, keys, cliffs, lagoons and endemic flora and fauna. In its seabed can be found up to more than forty types of corals, a wide diversity of fish and more than seventy types of molluscs. Some of the nautical practices available are diving, surfing, water skiing and excursions on different types of boats.
Alternative activities such as horse riding and cycling can be enjoyed on a daily basis. Golf lovers can practice it at the Varadero Golf Club of the Mansion Xanadu (Casa Dupont). The International Skydiving Center offers modalities for certified jumpers (Solo Jumps) and beginners (Tandem Jumps), certification courses in skydiving are also available.
In the mornings and afternoons you can visit interesting places such as the Casa del Chocolate, the Casa del Ron, the Josone Park and the Ceramics Workshop of the Cuban Cultural Heritage Fund. In excursions to more distant places, visits to sites such as the Casa de Al Capone Restaurant, the Saturno Cave, the Varahicacos Ecological Reserve, the Dolphinarium and the Gaviota Varadero Marina are available.
The nightlife is another of the attractions of Varadero. Dozens of cabarets, discos and night clubs are open every night. The hotels also offer their guests musical and variety shows. They all abound in salsa, merengue, bachata, reggaeton and international music of all kinds. Recommended sites include La Rumba Palace, La Comparsita, The Beatles Bar, the Casa de la Música and the Cueva el Pirata discotheque.
The Varadero tourist area is located on the northern coast of Matanzas, on the Hicacos Peninsula, 135 km east of Havana. It has about 30 km of extension of which 22 km are beaches. It is possible to arrive by plane in a few minutes, by land in about 2 hours or by sea through two of the three existing marinas. Nearby are other tourist destinations such as Cárdenas, the Ciénaga de Zapata and the San Miguel de los Baños resort.
Varadero has the largest concentration of hotels on the island. Some 25,000 rooms are spread over more than 50 hotels, including villas, bungalows, hotels and aparthotels, most of them located on the beachfront. 80% are 4 and 5 star hotels and there are also cheap and medium budget hotels available. The alternative option for accommodation is to stay in private homes. They are numerous and there are all kinds of them, some of them even luxurious.
According to an international survey, Varadero is among the top ten most sought-after locations worldwide. For Cubans and foreigners, it is simply a place to spend a happy day.
